Story
In the summer of 1982 ten disabled men, nine disabled women and ten volunteer attendants gathered together for a week of summer camp. Once funded by the Muscular Dystrophy Association but no longer supported, adults with muscular dystrophy ceased to have the accessible and recreational opportunities that they once enjoyed as kids. Everyone had to contribute out-of-pocket to pay the camp bill that first year.
It was decided that if the camping programs were to continue, the group would have to seek the nonprofit status needed to receive tax-deductible donations to raise money for future camps. Through months of efforts, community leaders, camp directors, nonprofit executives and other individuals were brought together and as a result “With A Little Help…”, Inc. was established.
The group was formally incorporated in late December of 1982 with the organizational purpose being, “A statewide, nonprofit organization providing camping and recreational opportunities for adults with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases.” The efforts of these trailblazing adults with disabilities and volunteer attendants fueled a long-term commitment to provide camping opportunities through present day.
Today no camper or volunteer pays to attend camp, they can experience an entire week of accessible activities and freedom in the summer and weekend camps in the fall and spring, completely free of cost to them or their families. All of this is possible thanks to fundraising campaigns such as this one. We encourage you to be a part of funding "the best week of the year" and impacting many lives by supporting With A Little Help Inc.
