Dr. Lorna Breen was a dedicated emergency physician in New York City who tragically took her own life at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her story became a powerful call to action, shining a light on the stigma, systemic barriers, and overwhelming pressures that prevent health care workers from seeking the mental health support they need.
Quick Connect Huddles is proud to support the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit created in her honor and dedicated to protecting the professional well-being and mental health of all health workers.
Before the passage of the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act, many clinicians faced intrusive and stigmatizing questions on licensure and credentialing applications. These practices discouraged health professionals from seeking the mental health care they needed, out of fear that honesty could jeopardize their careers.
By partnering with and supporting the Foundation, we join in advocating for a healthcare culture where seeking mental health services is universally recognized as a sign of strength. Together, we can help dismantle systemic barriers, reduce stigma, and ensure that every healthcare worker feels safe and supported in accessing care.... without penalty or fear of losing their job.
Studies show that physicians, especially female physicians, have higher suicide rates compared to the general population, and certain roles in health care (such as nurses and support staff) also face elevated risks. Our goal is to ensure that mental health support is available and stigma is reduced so no health care worker feels alone.
