Story

The Iowa Women's Jazz Orchestra is a jazz big band of women from across the state dedicated to showcasing and inspiring the participation of women and girls in jazz. Established in 2017, IWJO has electrified the Iowa jazz scene through our mission of performance, education, and advocacy in empowering women jazz musicians of all ages to see a future for themselves in this genre we love. Some of IWJO's most notable performances have been at the Iowa City Jazz Festival, Orchestra Iowa's Holiday Spectacular, and KCCK's Jazz Under the Stars, but our favorites are all of the opportunities we've had to collaborate with Iowa middle and high school jazz band programs, playing side-by-side with young musicians to spread our mission and champion their musical stories.
