Story

This past year we had a check-up in Florida like we always do. The Dr saw something on the X-ray of Nash's knee that he was concerned about so we got a CT scan for a closer look. We found out that the top of his Tibia, right below his knee, the growth plate was partially damaged which was causing his bone to grow crooked. They wanted to stop the growth ASAP so it didn't get any worse. That surgery was November 2022. He healed by Christmas and was back to playing Basketball ?

When we spoke to the doctors again, they told us that since the growth plate was damaged, we would now have to lengthen Nash's lower leg-tibia and fibula. They suggested doing it sooner rather than later because it was already shorter and after damaging the growth plate, it won't be growing in its own anymore. ?

This was a new bump in the road we didn't expect and a whole new bone to lengthen. We asked Nash what he wanted to do and without hesitation he said "let's go this summer"! He is definitely not scared of surgery and really just wants his legs to be the same length as he grows. It's just more comfortable for him to walk, run, play basketball and of course...fish :)

We will be leaving May 11, 2023. Nash's surgery to install an external fixator on his lower right leg will be May 16, 2023. He will have daily, 1- hour intense therapy at the hospital. We will also do 2 more daily sessions of stretches at home. His bone will be broken in surgery and we will distract it about 1mm every day. While his bone gets longer, we need to keep his muscles, veins, ligaments and skin stretched as well. He will have an X-ray and doctor appointment every 2 weeks. Our plan is to gain 5cm which will take 12 weeks.

Our whole family will go, including our 2 dogs.
Dad works while we are there. Mom is in charge of Nash's appointments. Hattie gets to swim and keep herself  and the dogs entertained most days while we are gone.

Hopefully everything goes smoothly, Nash stays strong and his body cooperates and we come back in August with a longer leg!!!
